Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa needed a digital platform that honored its 500+ year legacy while meeting the demands of modern accessibility, usability, and scalability. The mission was clear: bring SCML closer to the Portuguese public, share its ongoing work, and make access to information easier for everyone—across devices, audiences, and abilities.
The new site introduces a more intuitive structure and a fully reimagined design, supported by smarter navigation, faster search, and clear communication across SCML’s multiple areas of expertise.

We redesigned the institutional website from the ground up—centered on accessibility, clarity, and long-term growth. The homepage acts as a living hub, surfacing key content across social, health, cultural, and heritage programs. The navigation system is responsive, mobile-first, and intentionally simplified to serve a broad and diverse audience.
Accessibility was built into the process from day one. In collaboration with ACAPO (Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Portugal), the site was tested with screen readers and assistive devices, and validated according to W3C and WWW accessibility standards. Every section was designed to be inclusive—without compromising performance or experience.
"We appreciate the official website link receipt, which we were able to access a summary navigation and appears to be in accordance with the test version that we had the opportunity to do.
Once again we would like to congratulate Santa Casa for the work done in general and in what concerns the new site, in particular. "
Fernando Santos, responsible for IT and Telecommunications at ACAPO. He is visually impaired and uses the screen reader to be able to access the content.

The new website of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa has developed as a Theme and allows to grow without limit, SCML can continue to create pages and more info to the user without limit, using more than 200 sections and components to give info to the client.
A fully responsive website with state-of-the-art UI/UX thought to give the best experience to the user.
