Context

The National Museum of Ancient Art needed €600,000 to bring home Adoração dos Magos, a masterpiece by Domingos António de Sequeira that had been held in private hands. The goal: return the painting to public ownership. But instead of relying on traditional donors, the campaign opened the door to everyone—everyday citizens included.

Fuel, the creative agency behind the idea, challenged us to build more than just a generic crowdfunding page. It had to be engaging. It had to scale. And it had to make 10 million possible contributions feel personal.

Approach

We broke the canvas into 10 million pixels. Each person could “buyˮ one or more, choosing exactly where to place their mark. Every contribution was visually encoded with a unique RGB color, assigned in real time to their section of the painting.

This system did more than visualize progress—it turned every donation into digital presence. A living, color-coded layer grew across the original artwork, a mosaic of national effort.

Behind the curtain, we engineered for performance: real-time updates, color- coding for fast querying, and pixel-level rendering built to handle heavy load and complex purchase logic.

Results

The campaign surpassed its target by over €145,000—raising €745,623 from 5,430 individual donors and 173 organizations. It became a national movement, drawing widespread media attention and proving that art, technology, and collective action can share the same canvas.
